Boost is launching a magazine for creators, focused on a Gen-Z creative audience charting a new path forward around economic freedom. We’re launching this summer and are looking for freelance writers and other creatives to talk about money, work, and what it takes to build something—and how to make it more sustainable and build around the life you want to live.

Don’t worry if you’re not a writer by profession or are new to the work. If you have a story on building your own thing, creating financial freedom, and working on your own terms, we want to hear from you. We’ll help your words shine✨

Note: This is a brand-supported publication with an independent editorial team.

What we’re looking for

Tips and how-tos

Service journalisms for creatives and independent entrepreneurs on how they’ve made a positive change in their work life. Topics can range from “How I created email templates to get over my fear of negotiating” to “How to schedule your Monday morning to save time the rest of the week.” Our goal is to be immediately helpful to creators, so they can leave with tactical solutions. Bonus points if it’s on something too new to have a “best practice.”

What it looks like: 500-1200 words on a specific topic or question

Inspirations: Smarter Living, NYT; How To’s, Apartment Therapy

To pitch: Email [email protected] with a standard pitch including the problem you’re solving, a brief summary of the solution, and the impact the change has had (more time? scalability? less stress?).

Compensation: Dependent on length. Floor is $300 for 500 words.

Features: Profiles

We’re looking for features on interesting former side hustlers that turned their side hustles into their “thing” and are killing it. They don’t have to be famous, but they should be doing something unique or innovative, whether that’s process, product, or mindset. Always, we’re looking for strong storytelling and compelling subjects.

What it looks like: 800-1500 words, traditional “profile” style

To pitch: Email [email protected] with a standard pitch including why you’re interested in writing about this person and the broader themes, trends, and/or cultural issues the profile will touch on. (Read: don’t just send a name and handle: tell us why them, why now, and why it matters.) In addition, please send 2-3 links to stories you’ve worked on.

Compensation: Dependent on length and level of research required. Floor is $500 for 800 words.

Financial diary

Being an independent creator changes how you think about money. These diaries will showcase financial decision making and the reality of being a creator, specifically investing in your own business (and yourself), the tradeoffs (money is how we get things done sometimes!), and what you can actually earn and how that translates into building a life.

What is looks like: Track a creator’s financial inflow and outflow for a week to give some visibility into what it’s really like in a freelancer’s wallet, for the good and the bad. Track projects, payments, and expenses, with a short paragraph on the spend if necessary (maybe not for a latte, probably yes for a subscription).

Inspirations: Money diaries, Refinery29; How I get it done, The Cut; Top Shelf, Into the Gloss

To pitch: Email [email protected] with a brief bio and the five day period you want to track. If it’s a fit, we’ll send interview questions and a template to guide your tracking. *Can be anonymized
